The Presence
Of The Son Of Man
Prophecy is the major part of Jesus' witness about God (Revelation 19:10). It is not surprising that many text segments with numeric features like Exodus 34:6-7 are about the future.
Rejection Of The Son Of Man
And they will say to you,Lo, there!orLo, here!Do not go, do not follow them. For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of man be in his day. But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of man. They ate, they drank, they married, they were given in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. (Luke 17:23-27)1
These verses do not talk about Jesus' second coming. The Greek word ερχεται coming
is not in the text. Verse 23 is about the end times, but it actually goes with the verses before it. Verse 25 begins with, But first-
, which is a change in topic and time. Jesus was impressing upon his disciples what would happen closer to the present. By not using the word parousia, Luke's passage also serves a double purpose. It could mean near future, and far future.
In Jesus' time, just as in Noah's, people were eating, drinking, and marrying. People would be unaware when Jesus would be taken away from them. Even the disciples did not understand, and did not realize until too late. Forty years later, the Romans would destroy Jerusalem. And not long after that, the Jews would be scattered from Palestine.
Jesus warned his disciples not to listen to lies concerning the future. They are told not to follow
and they are told not to go.
Note that the Greek does not say Lo he is here.
Nor does it read, Lo he is there.
This leaves the subject open. It could be a person. It might be a thing or event. Jesus is warning us not to be caught up in the world's fads and manias.
The Son of Man's return will be like lightning in the skies. It will not be a matter of finding him at a specific locale. It will not be a private matter or going to some meeting.
Matthew 24:37-39 echoes Luke's account, but states it differently with the Greek word παρουσια (G3952 parousia From the present participle of G3918; a being near, that is, advent (often, return; specifically of Christ to punish Jerusalem, or finally the wicked); (by implication) physical aspect: - coming, presence.). This is usually translated as coming
as in the coming of the Son of Man.
(Later in verse 42, Matthew uses the word ερχεται to really talk of Jesus' coming.)
This word is translated differently in 2 Corinthians 10:10 and Philippians 2:12. In these two verses, the word is presence.
It cannot mean coming.
And with this in mind, verses like 1 Corinthians 16:17, 2 Corinthians 7:6, 2 Corinthians 7:7, 1 Thessalonians 2:19, 3:13, 5:23, 2 Thessalonians 2:9, James 5:8, and 1 John 2:28 all take on new meaning.
I rejoice in the presence of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus, because they have made up for your absence; (1 Corinthians 16:17)
But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the presence of Titus, (2 Corinthians 7:6)
and not only by his presence but also by the comfort with which he was comforted in you, as he told us of your longing, your mourning, your zeal for me, so that I rejoiced still more. (2 Corinthians 7:7)
For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus in his presence? Is it not you? (1 Thessalonians 2:19)
so that he may establish your hearts unblamable in holiness before our God and Father, in the presence of our Lord Jesus with all his saints. (1 Thessalonians 3:13)
May the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Thessalonians 5:23)
The presence of the lawless one by the activity of Satan will be with all power and with pretended signs and wonders, (2 Thessalonians 2:9)
You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the presence of the Lord is at hand. (James 5:8)
And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame in his presence. (1 John 2:28)
Translating parousia as coming
pushes events away from the present. But translating parousia as presence
gives a more immediate and active sense to many verses. Presence makes Jesus more real now, whether he has returned or not.
In the verse 20, before Luke 17:23, the Pharisees asked when the kingdom of God was coming. Jesus told them the kingdom was not visible, and was in the midst of you.
(Verse 21) This fits Matthew's use of the word parousia. Jesus' spiritual presence would not be visible, but it was in the midst of the disciples. That was where the kingdom of God resided.
Then he turned to his disciples and said, The days are coming when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and you will not see it.
(Verse 22) Naturally, having Jesus physically with them teaching and performing miracles was reassuring. (Having your beloved with you is better than having a memory.) Jesus told his disciples this phase of his ministry would end. And then he followed with the warning of replacing him or his teachings with the latest in worldly fads (verse 23).
Jesus might no longer be with us physically, but like lightning, his presence remains with us. And it matters not where we might be.
The last part of verse 27 is not part of the numbers Numerics Gematria. Consequences arising from mistakes are less important than avoiding the mistake in the first place. Nevertheless, Jesus' warning is clear. Being caught up in the world's ways will catch one in the many cataclysms that sweep the world (the Greek word is kataklusmos).

Prophecy Fulfilled In The Gospel
And we bring you the good news that what God promised to the fathers, this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus; as also it is written in the second psalm,Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee. And as for the fact that he raised him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, he spoke in this way,I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David.(Acts 13:32-34)
Prophecy is fulfilled in Jesus and by Jesus as recorded in the Gospels. By authenticating the statement above, the numbers Numerics Gematria also verify the Gospel accounts.
Only three words need to be removed from the beginning of verse 32. The English appears awkward, but not the Greek. "Announce glad tidings" can appear as a header before the rest of the statement. (See interlinear below with the numbers.)
