The Woman And The Dragon
And a great portent appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars; she was with child and she cried out in her pangs of birth, in anguish for delivery. And another portent appeared in heaven; behold, a great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems upon his heads. His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven, and cast them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to bear a child, that he might devour her child when she brought it forth; she brought forth a male child, one who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron, but her child was caught up to God and to his throne, and the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, in which to be nourished for one thousand two hundred and sixty days. Who is the woman in Revelation 12? The numeric features mark the passage as an important end time prophecy, the birth of the future ruler of the world, a representative of God. But what about the woman?
Various interpretations have been put forth by Christians over the ages. The most common are that she is either the Church, or Israel. A careful reading actually shows the common understanding is wrong.
It is not the Church (collectively) because none of the churches mentioned in chapters 2 and 3 bear the definite article. (Jesus speaks to the
angels of each church specifically. He does not speak to 'the' church in Smyrna
.) Contrast this with the Bride in Rev 19:7, where the definite article is always used. (See also 21:9 and 22:17.) When Jesus speaks of individual
churches, the definite article is not used. But when the Bride is mentioned, it is. This is because the Church (collectively) can only be the true Church and the one Bride. There is no other. Whereas individual churches cannot comprise the entire Church. The woman in Revelation 12 is mentioned without a definite article. Therefore, she is not the Bride or the Church.
If this woman is the church, what children does she have? Other churches? This makes no sense. There is only one Church.
Some even say the woman is the church, and at the same time say the child is Jesus. This would mean the church gives birth to Jesus, turning everything upside down. The church exists because of Jesus, not Jesus existing because of the church!
The Bride is clothed with the righteous deeds of the saints (Revelation 19:8). Her raiment is described as linen. This is not the same as being clothed with the sun.
Linking this woman with Israel is also an error. Many say it is Israel due to Joseph's dream in Genesis. But there is no woman in Joseph's dream, and Joseph is a man! Joseph saw only eleven stars, not twelve. And no one is clothed with the sun in his dream. The differences are too great to reconcile. Only one or two angels are mentioned for Israel's covenant, not twelve (Daniel 10:13, 21; Daniel 12: 1; Malachi 3:1). Linking this woman with Israel is built on many assumptions. It is shifting sand.
Being clothed with the sun shows this woman's primordial state, like Adam and Eve before the fall and also before the law of Moses. This does not mean she is perfect. She is considered perfect by the grace of God (Genesis 15:6). This woman represents all those who believe, but are not Jewish or Christian. She is the ancestor of both Jews and Christians, because her children hold God's commands and the testimony of Jesus (Revelation 12:17). This woman falls under the category of Romans 2:14. She does by nature what the law requires even though she has not the law.
And since this woman is not the Church (Bride of Christ), and is not Israel, that means this child is not Jesus. If this child was Jesus, this would contradict Revelation 12:12, where the devil knows his time is short. From Jesus to the present is 2000 years. That is not a short time!
(She is not Muslim because Muslims do not have God's commands and do not recognize Jesus as anything other than a man and a prophet. Muslims see and do all things according to the life of Muhammad, not according to the law of Moses and not according to the life of Jesus. At the very least, they do not have the nature
which sets this woman apart.)
From these believers will come the future ruler of the entire world (Revelation 12:5). The Greek word ποιμαινειν is actually to shepherd
the nations. (G4165 poimaino From G4166; to tend as a shepherd (or figuratively supervisor): - feed (cattle), rule.3) It will not be anything like what people currently understand as government, empire or rule. God's way is not man's way.
This child will be leading the armies of heaven (Revelation 19:11-16, 19). He was also prophesied by David in Psalm 110:5. From Psalm 110:1 and verse 5, he sits at Jesus' right hand, as Jesus sits at God's right hand. After Jesus conquered, he sat down at God's right hand and no longer needs do anything (Mark 16:19; Hebrews 1:3, 10:12). This child
will be the executive of Jesus' will.
Satan, of course, will attempt to destroy this child not long after he is born. He fails because God intervenes directly to remove the child (Revelation 12:5). The child's mother is removed to the wilderness for safety, for 1260 days (verse 6). This leads Satan to challenge heaven itself (verse 7). Michael and his angels make short work of Satan's incursion (verse 8). Unable to get the child, Satan now turns back after the woman for vengeance (verse 13).
The woman is given two great wings of an eagle to escape to a prepared place for a time, two times and half a time (verse 14). There is no mention of who is giving these wings. It might not be God and it might not be an angel.
Satan sends a flood after the woman (verse 15), but the earth swallows it (verse 16). Stymied at every turn, Satan finally goes after the only ones left he can still reach, those who keep God's commands, and those who have Jesus' testimony.
The future still shrouds these events in mystery, but they will become clearer as the end approaches. The numeric features assure us of the importance of these events.
Start at the 19th word (dropping 18 from the beginning of verse 1). The numbers Numerics Gematria run to the end of verse 6. 4
This removes the opening introductory phrase, And a great portent appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet
. The focus now shifts to the crown of twelve stars. If the imagery of Revelation is used, these stars represent angels (Revelation 1:20). The number twelve links her to the elders around God's throne (Revelation 4:4).
