Religion That Blinds
The numbers Numerics Gematria assure us these accounts of Jesus' last days are accurate and truthful.
Assumptions take life on their own. Because the disciples had preconceived notions from their own culture and times, they failed to see the end that was coming for Jesus. Even though Jesus told them quite plainly, they did not understand. They didn't even dare ask for an explanation. Instead, the disciples got caught up in a selfish debate about who among them was the greatest.
Man made religion stealthily seeps into true believers in the most subtle ways. It is difficult to guard against when everyone around you seems to think everything is fine. It blinded the disciples making them quickly change the subject.
And all were astonished at the majesty of God. But while they were all marveling at everything he did, he said to his disciples,Let these words sink into your ears; for the Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men.But they did not understand this saying, and it was concealed from them, that they should not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask him about this saying. And an argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest. (Luke 9:43-46)1

Man Made Religion Seeks Death
The Apostle John's gospel was written after the other three, and after the fall of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. He saw the end coming for his nation as Jesus warned, and he saw the city fall. His gospel reflected the insight and hindsight he had garnered over his long life.
John tells us clearly the religious rulers sought Jesus' death before his arrest and crucifixion (John 11:44-52). It was deliberate and planned. This was no accident or mistake.
They feared the Romans more than they feared God. One would think that a miracle worker who could raise the dead would be more than a match for the legions of Rome, but the religious class did not think this way at all. To them, the great miracles of Moses, the victories of David did not count. They did not believe their own religion because they had replaced it with a man made religion (Isaiah 29:13; Matthew 15:9).
And because they had their own religion, they could not see Jesus as the fulfillment of prophecy. They rejected his teaching and his miracles. They preferred to kill the true messenger.
So from that day on they took counsel how to put him to death. Jesus therefore no longer went about openly among the Jews, but went from there to the country near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim; and there he stayed with the disciples. (John 11:53-54)

Man Made Religion Kills
And Jesus said to them,Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. But let the scriptures be fulfilled.(Mark 14:48-49)
- The ruling class didn't dare do it in day time.
- They feared public opinion. (But public opinion would not stop them.)
- They were against Jesus' teachings, but they could not refute it.
- They rejected Jesus' miracles. This meant they knowingly rejected a prophet from God.
- Their use of weapons and numbers meant they fully intended violence if opposed.
- They did not understand God, Jesus, or even their own religion.
- They had replaced Moses' religion with their own.

The superfluous Greek word at the beginning of verse 48 is dropped, along with the last five words in verse 49. For believers, Jesus' statement that this is the fulfillment of prophecy is unnecessary.
