God, The Master Of Time

Only God knows the future, and only He controls it (Isaiah 40:21-42:17). In these 57 verses God told ancient Judah what He is going to do. These were new prophecies to take the place of prophecies that had already been fulfilled. They were to show God as master of time. He alone knew the future. Only God, who knew the future, could warn people they were going astray. Human created gods were worse than useless, a delusion.

God reveals three mysterious individuals who will bring judgment across large sections of the world (Isaiah 41:1-5). The third individual will encompass the world. Nevertheless, in the end it is God who brings the final judgment (Isaiah 42:13-17).

Who has stirred up one from the east, calling him in righteousness to his service? He hands nations over to him and subdues kings before him. He turns them to dust with his sword, to windblown chaff with his bow. He pursues them and moves on unscathed, by a path his feet have not traveled before. (Isaiah 41:2-3)¹

The first is a conqueror from the east with impressive power over nations and kings. But it is God who stirred him up. It is God in righteousness who calls this individual to serve His purposes. God sweeps aside the nations for him, and subdues kings before him. Only because of God can this conqueror treat nations as dust, and stubble.

The distinguishing mark of this conqueror is that he travels new territory, lands he has never crossed before. This can only mean he does not travel by foot.

He causes great fear among the nations (verse 5). But the reaction of this fear is that the nations cling ever more tightly to their idols (verses 6-7).

God assures Israel He is with them, and that they should not fear this terrible conqueror. He has a different plan for them, separate from the nations crushed by this conqueror (verses 8-20).

Who is this future conqueror? It cannot be Cyrus since the Persians were mercenaries in Mesopotamia long before they became a major power. Cyrus was not conquering unknown lands. And Cyrus did not cause fear across the world.

Strangely, some commentators have even identified this mysterious person as Abraham. (Have they even read the prophecy?) Like Cyrus, Abraham did not cause fear throughout the world. God said these were new prophecies (Isaiah 42:9, 48:7). They are of the future.

The Mongols under Genghis Khan are a possible match with this description. Their cavalry burst out from the steppes of Asia, sweeping westwards into lands they had never traveled before. They were a tidal wave that forever changed the Western view of the Far East. Even the vast Muslim empire fell before them. Historians estimate a million Muslims were slaughtered at Baghdad by the Mongol commander Hulagu.² The term Yellow Peril is forever embedded in Western consciousness.

The fact that the prophecy begins with Who has stirred- opens the possibility God is only indirectly responsible for his coming. God removes the obstacles, but God is not behind this conqueror. God acts in righteousness. This conqueror does not, and that is why the nations fear him.

I stirred up one from the north, and he has come, from the rising of the sun, and he shall call on my name; he shall trample on rulers as on mortar, as the potter treads clay. Who declared it from the beginning, that we might know, and beforetime, that we might say, He is right? There was none who declared it, none who proclaimed, none who heard your words. I first have declared it to Zion, and I give to Jerusalem a herald of good tidings. (Isaiah 41:25-27)

Unlike the first, God actually says He stirred up this conqueror. This second prophecy is of one who will come from the north but approaches from the east. This individual knows God’s name. Unlike the conqueror first mentioned, this person is meant to be good news for Jerusalem. God gives this prophecy so people will know He is right.

Cyrus the Persian fits this prophecy best.³ Persia is situated north and east of Israel. At first, the Medes and Persians were mercenaries coming down from the north in service to Mesopotamian kings. Later, they took over the entire region, approaching Israel from the north and east.

God reserves the longest prophecy for the third individual.

Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him, he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not fail or be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his law. (Isaiah 42:1-4)

The third individual is the one God actually loves. This is Jesus, because he has God’s spirit. He will bring justice and healing. Unlike the other two, he will be gentle (Isaiah 42:1-7). Unlike the other two who came by force, and used force to achieve their means, Jesus takes time, possibly centuries, to establish true justice. (Most of Western culture's best traditions, best values and the best ideals arose from the influence of Christianity.)

The first two conquerors do not have God behind them. Jesus does (Isaiah 42:5-10). Jesus' coming was meant to be a joyful celebration of God’s healing love (Isaiah 42:11-12). Those who reject Jesus will face God’s wrath (Isaiah 42:13-17).

Beginning with the first (or not) and taking every Nth word or letter may seem arbitrary, but these numbers are all from the factors derived from the number of words and letters. They are not exactly random.

Features 8.1 and 8.1.1 are the only two dealing with words. 26 and 52 are both divisible by 13.

Past Evidence Of God’s Supremacy

Genesis chapter ten records the descendants of Noah filling the earth after the flood. Its numeric features pale in comparison with what was presented above, but the few features it does have bear God’s signature. These features show God allotted time and place for each nation according to a plan.

When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of men, he fixed the bounds of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God. (Deuteronomy 32:8)⁴

The 287 Hebrew words of Genesis 10 are given below along with the numeric conversion.⁵

4.The 287 words can be divided two ways: 3.1) as seven groups of 41 words each, or 3.2) as forty-one groups of 7 words each.

4.1.1Of the seven groups (41 words each), the odd positioned groups together total 42378 = 2 x 3 x 7 x 1009.

4.1.2The even positioned groups total 33201 = 3 x 3 x 7 x 17 x 31.

4.1.3The first word from each of these groups: 2722 = 2 x 1361. The last word from each group: 1639 = 11 x 149. Neither of these are divisible by 7 or 13, because this chapter is about nations, and peoples, not about God. 4.1.4Of the 7 groups of 41 words, two groups had totals that were prime numbers: 14081 + 11161 = 25242 (2 x 3 x 7 x 601).

4.2This time divide the 287 words into forty-one groups with seven words in each group.

4.2.1Add up the first word of each group: 8461 (no feature). The beginning of a nation is not as important as its end.

4.2.2Add up the last word of each group: 11158 = 2 x 7 x 797. SF: 806 = 2 x 13 x 31. SF: 46 = 2 x 23. The end of a nation is seen in its completion with the factor of 7. The judgment of God can be see in the sum of the first factors with a 13. The final sum of the factors is 46, which is the number of man (i.e. judgment falls on men).

4.2.3Of the 41 groups of 7, three were divisible by 7. (Three out of 41 is below average.)

Group 5: 2583 = 3 x 3 x 7 x 41.
Group 23: 2695 = 5 x 7 x 7 x 11.

God’s handiwork in Genesis 10 can clearly be seen. These nations, tribes, and languages all came from the sons of Noah. And of these nations only Egypt remains, a shadow of its former self so different it could be termed a different nation or people. The numbers for Genesis 10 emphasize the fate of all nations:

Behold, is it not from the lord of hosts that peoples labor only for fire, and nations weary themselves for nought? (Habakkuk 2:13)

Therefore wait for me, says the lord, for the day when I arise as a witness. For my decision is to gather nations, to assemble kingdoms, to pour out upon them my indignation, all the heat of my anger; for in the fire of my jealous wrath all the earth shall be consumed. (Zephaniah 3:8)

Conclusion

These verses show the design of the past and future. God is the architect. Any person or nation who rejects the lord, or chooses another or even depends on anything else will be swept aside. God determines the rise and fall of nations.
