An Evil End Time Generation
Prophecy is a vital part of the believer's life (Revelation 19:10; 1 Corinthians 14:39). Warnings about the future are to be taken seriously. 2 Timothy 2:22-3:5 is one such warning.
So shun youthful passions and aim at righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call upon the Lord from a pure heart. Have nothing to do with stupid, senseless controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but kindly to every one, an apt teacher, forbearing, correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant that they will repent and come to know the truth, and they may escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will. But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of stress. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, inhuman, implacable, slanderers, profligates, fierce, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding the form of religion but denying the power of it. Avoid such people. (2 Timothy 2:22-3:5)1

By dropping the first few words, Paul's advice to Timothy becomes more of a command: Aim at righteousness, faith, love, and peace...
The importance of this advice and prophecy is clearer. It is not a suggestion of how believers are to develop their character. It is a requirement.
The 77th word in the numeric passage (at the end of 2 Timothy 3:2) is χαλεποι (G5467 khal-ep-os' Perhaps from G5465 through the idea of reducing the strength; difficult, that is, dangerous, or (by implication) furious: - fierce, perilous.).5 Paul uses it to describe the end times. It occurs only twice in the Bible. In Matthew 8:28 it describes the two demon possessed men. They were so violent
no one could subdue them.
This leads into verse 3:2 where people will be lovers of self.
This is not the normal sense of loving oneself as in love your neighbour as yourself
(Matthew 22:39). Because of the violent or fearsome times, it will also be a violent or fierce self love. The characteristics of this type of self love follow in the rest of 2 Timothy 3:2-5.
lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, inhuman, implacable, slanderers, profligates, fierce, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding the form of religion but denying the power of it.
