ChangJie Numbers

A Final Marvelous Coincidence

In 1976, Chu Bong-Foo invented the ChangJie system, adapting Chinese typesetting to standard Western keyboards. Up to that time Chinese printers used a variety of extra large keyboards (many with hundreds of keys).

The ChangJie system was based on how Chinese characters were written. Radicals and types of strokes with similar characteristics were classified into 24 groups and matched to the QWERTY keyboard. Following the rules in ChangJie, a typist would hit keys sketching the basic appearance of a character, and the machine would present a list of characters matching that description for further selection. (Some lists could be long.) Typing from one to five keys was enough to cover the entire written Chinese language. (For more on ChangJie, see the Wikipedia article.)

Could the ChangJie keys/symbols be used for numbers like the characters? Yes they can! But there are some very important caveats.

ChangJie symbols are not letters, and most of the time they don't completely describe a character. The letters L-I-S-T are integral to spelling out the word "list" and give the pronunciation. You can't drop one letter without it becoming something else. One can imagine how many words can be sketched from an incomplete description like L-T: late, loot, let, lit, lite, list...

Letters are traditionally organized in alphabetical sequence, and the sequence determines how they are numbered. How are symbols organized? Just because Chu Bong-Foo placed the 日 symbol on the A-key doesn't mean this symbol has to come first and receive the value 1. One could have begun with 手 (Q-key) on the upper left of the keyboard.

Because symbols are not letters, the numbers derived from them will be completely independent of the original value of the character in Big5. And since the symbols are not actually anything close to the words in sound or meaning, it should not be surprising if results are inconsistent.

(Note: As there is no upper and lower case in Chinese, the assigned symbols are not case sensitive either. The ChangJie system treats capital "A" and lower case "a" exactly the same.)

This page presents a numeric system where ChangJie symbols are numbered from 1 to 9, 10 to 90, and 100 to 700 (letter/key Z is not used). The order in which the symbols are given their numeric values is the order in which they are first used to describe the characters in Big5 (not in the A to Z order Westerners are familiar with).

The first 167 Big5 characters are given below, followed by their ChangJie keystrokes.

A Simple Test

The first test is to see if God’s title in Chinese (上帝) produces anything with ChangJie. This is the same test first used for God’s name in Greek, English, and with Big5.

The ChangJie symbols for 上 are 卜 and 一 (Y & M keys on the keyboard). From the table, 卜 has the value 8, and 一 has the value 1 for a sum of 9.

帝's ChangJie symbols are 卜, 月, 中 月, (keys YBLB). The numbers associated with these symbols: 8-10-5-10. The sum for 帝 is 33.

Thus the total for the two characters together (上帝) is 9 + 33, or 42. And of course 42 = 2 x 3 x 7. This basic test appears to show ChangJie numbers are valid for further investigation.

Curious coincidence: Combine the value of the characters for 上帝 with its value in ChangJie. 1963 + 42 = 2005. The result is not divisible by 7 or 13, but that was to be expected since 1963 was divisible by 13 and 42 was divisible by 7. There doesn't seem to be anything here until 2005 is factored: 5 x 401. The sum of the factors is 406, and this is divisible by 7: 2 x 7 x 29. The sum of 406's factors is 38 and once again not divisible by 7 or 13. But then factoring 38 we get 2 x 19, and the sum of these factors is 21 (3 x 7). Finally, 3 + 7 = 10 (not divisible by 7 again), but 10 = 2 x 5, and 2 + 5 ends at 7. This series of numbers alternates back and forth quite regularly from being divisible by 7, and not being divisible by 7.

Various ChangJie Numbers
耶穌Jesus393 = 3 x 131
聖經Holy Bible238 = 2 x 7 x 17. SF: 26 = 2 x 13.
聖靈Holy Spirit306 = 2 x 3 x 3 x 17
耶和華Yeh Woh Wah
(English transliteration of Hebrew YHWH)
1502 = 2 x 751
god(s), divine, special159 = 3 x 53

Why are the Chinese characters for Jesus and the Holy Spirit not divisible by 7 and or 13? And why is the Bible divisible by 7, and on the next level divisible by 13? One would expect Jesus and Holy Spirit to show something only if one accepted the theory of the Trinity as being true.

The Bible 聖經 is the record of God’s message to humanity. Without it, we would know very little about God, His plan, and His work. Without it, we would not know about Jesus either. Word of mouth might suffice, but we would be so much the poorer without it.

One set of numbers do not make the Bible more important than Jesus or the Holy Spirit. That is not the conclusion here. The numbers just show the Bible's importance, while the lack of numbers for Jesus and the Holy Spirit are probably because God does not approve of the theory of the Trinity, and doesn't want anyone mistaking a few numbers as proof the theory is sound.

Like the numbers for the characters, the numbers for the ChangJie confirm the proper title in Chinese for God is 上帝, not 耶和華 (a transliteration), and not 神.

The Proclamation

Now ChangJie numbers are applied to the amended text of the Proclamation (Exodus 34:6-7).

Total of all the characters: 20440 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 5 x 7 x 73. The sum of the factors: 91 = 7 x 13.

The values of the first symbol of each character do not produce a feature: 6388 = 2 x 2 x 1597, but the last symbol for each character does: 13335 = 3 x 5 x 7 x 127.

Odd positioned characters: 8981 = 7 x 1283. Even positioned characters: 11459 = 7 x 1637. The ChangJie values work just as the original values for the characters.

The odd and even valued characters are not divisible by 7, but they are divisible by 73, the largest factor of the total 20440. Odd valued characters: 8030 = 2 x 5 x 11 x 73. SF: 91 = 7 x 13. Even valued characters: 12410 = 2 x 5 x 17 x 73.

Odd valued symbols: 338 = 2 x 13 x 13. SF: 28 = 2 x 2 x 7. (No coincidence with the even valued symbols.)

It is amazing how a few of the primary features come through!

Revelation 1:8

Revelation 1:8 is intricately tied in with Exodus 34:6-7. Do ChangJie numbers work here too?

ΑΩ (Alpha Omega) are not Chinese characters, and thus do not have ChangJie symbols. However, the ChangJie rules could be applied to them as if they were Chinese characters to give them unofficial key sequences.

The thirteenth word in Revelation 1:8 is 今. It's ChangJie is OIN. The O symbol represents the peaked roof in 今. Thus O can also stand in for the peak in Α (Alpha). The horizontal bar in Α can be represented by the ChangJie symbol M (see the 23rd word of Revelation 1:8). If Α was a Chinese character, its ChangJie sequence would be OM.

Ω (Omega) can only be represented by Changjie symbol B. This symbol represents anything similar to an inverted U or 冂 (there being no round or circular symbols with an open bottom).

Once again the total of the ChangJie numbers is divisible by seven: 6139 = 7 x 877.

And once again the odd and even positioned characters are divisible by 7. Odd positioned: 2765 = 5 x 7 x 79. Even positioned characters: 3374 = 2 x 7 x 241.

Unlike The Proclamation, Revelation 1:8's declaration does not have any other primary features. There are very good reasons for this. 1) ChangJie symbols are not letters. 2) Two of the characters (Α and Ω) aren't even Chinese.

Other Verses

What about other Chinese verses?

Genesis 1:1 has four features.

8- 30- 80- 60 1- 7 80- 300- 200

Total: 1197 = 3 x 3 x 7 x 19.

First symbol values: 260 = 2 x 2 x 5 x 13.

Last symbol values: 884 = 2 x 2 x 13 x 17.

Even valued symbols: 1170 = 2 x 3 x 3 x 5 x 13. (Odd valued symbols do not produce anything.)

Revelation 22:13, John 1:1 and Isaiah 18 all produce very little or fail completely. Skeptics would say there is nothing special here. It's all just the mathematical odds. If even more verses were examined, the results would simply be one in seven verses with a single feature, and one in forty-nine verses with two features. They would claim the results in Exodus 34:6-7, Revelation 1:8 and Genesis 1:1 were all due to coincidence.

In the case of ChangJie numbers, they may be correct. Nevertheless, I am pleased the two unique verses where God described Himself produced results, and I am quite satisfied the very first verse of the Bible, Genesis 1:1 also worked.

It must be remembered that Chinese is not the original language of the Bible. As a result, the numbers from the characters are already one step further away from the original. ChangJie numbers would be two steps further from the original.

More Proof

Prophecy Is Proven In History

Miracle In History, by Raymond Chin presents absolute proof of God by demonstrating the link between prophecy and history. This short book is packed with information (not opinion). It shows how modern Israel's victory in 1967 fulfilled prophecy, and how this can be calculated. (n.b. This is based on a literal Bible Chronology not on Bible Numbers 2.0, Bible Numerics or Gematria. It is a completely independent work.) For more information...
