Part 7: The Proclamation In English
On the previous page, with the help of a computer, a translation of Exodus 34:6-7 into Chinese was constructed that had many numeric coincidences following the rules in Revelation 1:8. This was achieved by following the original Hebrew as closely as possible. Can the same thing be done in English? Yes it can. The result is presented below.
(N.B. An experiment was carried out using different English Bible translations to construct The Proclamation. That attempt required over 40 million combinations to find something.)
The pertinent Hebrew vocabulary of Exodus 34:6-7 is presented in the table below in the first column. (Hebrew words, letters are read from right to left.) This is followed by the approximate English meaning. The third column gives an explanation for the Hebrew, how it fits in with the rest of the verse, and choosing English words to translate. Various English words or phrases are given in the last column as options to be used in translation.
Hebrew | English Meaning | English Word Choice Explanation | English Options |
---|---|---|---|
וַיִּקְרָא֒ | And he proclaimed | Since Hebrew is a language with agreement between nouns and verbs, the very first word, a verb, carries with it the third person singular, gender and tense. English does not have this. Thus in English the third person singular and gender must be handled separately from the verb itself. | And he |
The English language has grown to more than a million words, thus these are only a few of the possibilities for translating this Hebrew word. | proclaimed | ||
announced | |||
declared | יְהוָ֣ה יְהוָ֣ה | God’s name in Hebrew. | Most English Bibles use The Lord with the definite article and capitals to set apart the name from any other lord.But today, with widespread education and internet, it would be possible to even include the choice of Yhwhthough this is not a proper English word. | The Lord The Lord |
Yhwh Yhwh | |||
אֵ֥ל | God | There can be only one word in English for the Hebrew El. | God |
רַח֖וּם וְחַנּ֑וּן | merciful and gracious | This translation is used in many English Bibles and will be used here. The English verb iscan help with the flow, but it can also be left out. | is merciful and gracious |
merciful and gracious | |||
אֶ֥רֶךְ אַפַּ֖יִם | slow to anger | The Hebrew word for anger ends with יִם which denotes plural (i.e. angers). This can be expressed several ways in English. | slow to anger |
slow to angers | |||
slow of angers | |||
slow of anger | |||
וְרַב־ חֶ֥סֶד | and abundant love | The letter וְ in וְרַב־ gives the sense of and. | and |
Three English choices cover the rest of the phrase. | abundant in love | ||
abounding in love | |||
abounding with love | |||
וֶאֱמֶֽת׃ | stability truth trustworthy | Some English Bibles translate this as faithfulness.But the Hebrew has more of the sense of dependability. | and all trustworthy |
and trustworthiness | |||
נֹצֵ֥ר | keeping | This Hebrew word means to guard.Five possible options have been chosen for the English. | keeping |
maintaining | |||
showing | |||
sustaining | |||
continuing | |||
חֶ֙סֶד֙ לָאֲלָפִ֔ים | love for thousands | Most English Bibles translate these two Hebrew words the same way. | love for thousands |
נֹשֵׂ֥א | forgiving | There is only one word in English that best fits. | forgiving |
עָוֹ֛ן | iniquity | The Hebrew word also has the sense of perversity and moral evil. Contrasting with the next two items that God forgives, this word seems more unintentional or perhaps accidental. Three English words have been chosen as options. | iniquity |
error | |||
failure | |||
וָפֶ֖שַׁע | transgression | This Hebrew word also has the sense of rebellion. Unlike the previous word, this is intentional and deliberate. | transgression |
disobedience | |||
rebellion | |||
וְחַטָּאָ֑ה | sin | This word denotes the actual crime. | sin |
וְנַקֵּה֙ לֹ֣א יְנַקֶּ֔ה | to be or to make clean | Abraham uses the same word וְנִקִּ֕יתָ (which is the same root word) to tell his steward he would be free or clear of the oath if Rebekah was not willing to come with him (Genesis 24:8). Thus the literal Hebrew meaning in Exodus 34:7 would be clear(ing) not clear(ing).Since this follows the part concerning God’s forgiveness this either relates to that forgiveness, or to those who are not forgiven. It is God’s sovereign prerogative to decide whom He favours (Exodus 33:19). But none of this is done on a whim or in a capricious manner. If someone is not forgiven, God still undertakes a process of clearing or not clearingthat person. This is God’s judicial function. This explains what happens in the last part of verse seven. Verse seven's last twelve words are part of the process determining whether one is innocent or guilty. | verifying innocence or guilt |
deciding innocence or guilt | |||
clearing and not clearing guilt | |||
clearing and not clearing | |||
clearing or not clearing guilt | |||
clearing or not clearing | |||
פֹּקֵ֣ד | visiting oversee punishment | The original and main Hebrew meaning was to visit. As explained in Strong's Dictionary, this could be with either friendly or hostile intent. Given the context, the best English word would be testing. | by testing |
testing | |||
עֲוֹ֣ן | iniquity | This same word already appeared five sections above. The same English words are chosen. | iniquity |
error | |||
failure | |||
עַל־ | on upon over above against | Hebrew word order places the word אָב֗וֹת (father) immediately after the word עֲוֹ֣ן (iniquity), followed by עַל־ (on). Translators have this as the father's iniquityor the iniquity of the fatheron succeeding generations. To avoid the impression that this exempts the father from his own iniquity, English word order has been adjusted placing this Hebrew word עַל־ (on) after עֲוֹ֣ן (iniquity). Iniquity would include the father with succeeding generations. | on |
upon | |||
אָב֗וֹת | father | One could also have used more informal terms such as, dad, pa, or even pop, but none of these English words seem appropriate to the context. | the father |
בָּנִים֙ וְעַל־ בְּנֵ֣י בָנִ֔ים | children and on children's children | בָּנִים֙ The first two Hebrew letters have English equivalents of B and N. This is where English gets the name Ben as in Benjamin. The Hebrew word can also mean son. The son's son would be grandson. | on the son and on the grandson |
on the children and on the childrens children | |||
upon the son and upon the grandson | |||
upon the children and upon the childrens children | |||
עַל־ שִׁלֵּשִׁ֖ים וְעַל־ רִבֵּעִֽים׃ | on third and on fourth | The literal Hebrew meaning in English is given in the second column. This is after iniquity being tested on the father, son and grandson. Verse seven's remaining words continue with on third and on fourth.This seems to imply generation. | three four generations |
to the third and fourth generation |
It is obvious any English options in the fourth column could have been multiplied many times over. The very last option could have been rephrased many different ways.
to three four generations to the third and the fourth generation to the third and the fourth generations on three four generations on the third and fourth generation on the third and the fourth generations upon three four generations upon the third and fourth generation upon the third and the fourth generations till three four generations till the third and fourth generation till the third and the fourth generations up to three four generations up to the third and the fourth generation up to the third and the fourth generations
It is impossible to account for every possibility. But surprisingly, the limited options above will actually succeed without adding more.
A computer can run through the options listed above, selecting one from each section to construct a translation for Exodus 34:6-7. The options above generate 7,464,960 different phrases. This is much smaller than the permutations for Chinese translation (53,084,160), and the previous experiment in English (40,550,400). Thus the chances of finding something spectacular should be very unlikely. This is what the computer discovered.
And he announced: Yhwh, Yhwh God, merciful and gracious, slow of angers, and abounding with love and all trustworthy, continuing love for thousands, forgiving failure rebellion and sin; clearing or not clearing guilt, testing failure on the father, on the son, and on the grandson three four generations.
There are 48 words and 173 letters in this translation. The original Hebrew had 33 words and 119 letters. Compare this with the RSV's 61 words and 221 letters, and the KJV's 58 words and 213 letters. There is a point where too many words are the result of explanation, not interpretation and not translation.
Some points of interest in this translation:
- The reader is reminded of the actual Hebrew name that God gave for Himself.
- It emphasizes that God is not just slow of anger, but that He is slow regarding angers (plural).
- God’s trustworthiness is emphasized. Many translations use the word faithfulness. But when one really thinks of the word faithfulness there is also the sense of loyalty. Is it truly accurate to say God is loyal to us? Isn't it the other way around? We are supposed to be loyal, or faithful to God. One can be faithful to a cause, but it's not really appropriate to say the cause is faithful to us. It is more appropriate to say the cause is worth it, or trustworthy.
- God’s love continues to flow, not just
keeping.
- Failure is forgiven, and it is also tested. As the saying goes, "To err is human—". This is the human condition. Intentional or not, or even accidental, when we try our best and fail God can forgive.
- If one is not forgiven, God undertakes a second step to review the matter.
- Life is a test, and this is carried out on every generation.

Numeric Coincidences
The main numeric features of the original Hebrew followed Revelation 1:8.
- The total was divisible by seven.
- The sum of the first and last letters of each word was divisible by seven.
- The total of the first letter of each word was divisible by seven by itself.
- And this naturally meant the sum of the last letter of each word was automatically divisible by seven on it's own.
- Every other letter (odd positioned) added together produced a total divisible by seven.
- This meant all the even positioned letters were also divisible by seven.
Coincidentally, all these features (and more) appear in this English version of Exodus 34:6-7.
The Words
A.1Similar to the Chinese, the first and last words of the English translation have a coincidence on their own. The first word's total is 35, and the last word's total is 277. First and last: 35 + 277 = 312 (23 x 3 x 13).
A.2The first and last words occupy the first and forty-eighth word positions. Together: 49 = 7 x 7. This holds true for any words paired Nth and Nth last because there are 48 words in the passage.
A.3The letters of these two words occupy the following positions in the passage:
1 2 3 167 168 169 170 171 172 173
Total: 1196 = 22 x 13 x 23.
A.4There are exactly 117 digits in the word sums (32 x 13).
A.4.1The 117 digits can be joined together to form 13 numbers with nine digits each.
357984144 141098351 401805167 357318710 035218371 791006526 219776112 351001106 011011096 266763087 153308710 035308720 114765277
Total of these numbers: 3236365377 = 32 x 72 x 149 x 49253.
In Revelation 1:8, God said He is, was and is to come.
The present tense is placed first before the past. The past and future, which were separated, are placed next to each other, in effect joining them together. Thus the separate word digits are joined together and then separated equally.
I am the Alpha and the Omega,says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. (Revelation 1:8 RSV)
B.I am
: The present is lived through. Add up the entire passage. This brings us to a most astonishing coincidence, the sum of the entire passage: 6174 = 2 x 32 x 73. This is the exact same total for the passage in Hebrew. This is more than simply a one seven million chance!
How is it possible that translating Hebrew to English results in exactly the same numeric total when the alphabets and words are different? One could attribute this to chance, or one could attribute this to the idea of God describing Himself in both languages. Since God created the universe, and our languages, He is the reality behind both.
This does not mean that every translation of the Bible from Hebrew to English yields or should yield the same result. This only holds for Exodus 34:6-7, because this passage is unique in all the Bible.
B.2In the Chinese, the digits of the total pointed to six characters from the beginning and the end. With the four digit total in English, there is the option of looking for four words at the beginning and end, or four letters. In this case, it is the letters.
Total of the passage: | 6 | 1 | 7 | 4 |
Letter from the beginning: | 30 | 1 | 30 | 7 |
Letter from the end: | 30 | 70 | 6 | 1 |
Letter total: 175 = 52 x 7.
Applying this same technqiue to the words results in a total of 1100. This is not divisible by 7 or 13, but the eleven is a nice numerical representation of the one God at the beginning and end.
Unlike the Chinese, which goes further with the factors of the passage's total, the English ends here. The two languages are radically different, so a continuous match should not be expected. The English is a more like the original Hebrew, because it uses an alphabet.
I am the Alpha and the Omega,says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. (Revelation 1:8 RSV)
Who is and who was and who is to come—
The present tense is listed before the past and future, leaving a gap between the two. This leads to looking at every other word.

C.1One of the main features of the Hebrew (following Revelation 1:8) was that the first and last letters of each word produced a total divisible by seven. The same is true of the English (line f): 3633 = 3 x 7 x 173.
C.1.1The 48 totals of the first and last letters in line F can be divided into groups of 16 and in half (groups of 24). Some of these subdivisions can be further grouped into smaller sections. Follow the dots to delve deeper.

D.Odd and even are complementary opposites like Alpha and Omega. This was applied to the positions of the words and groups of words. But odd and even could also apply to the values of the words. There is a perfect balance between the odd and even valued words. Both groups have 24 words.

The chart below shows how many ways a list of words can be subdivided into various groups.
Number Possible of words group sizes 48 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 24 24 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12 16 1, 2, 4, 8 12 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 8 1, 2, 4 6 1, 2, 3 4 1, 2 3 1 2 1
In the coincidences above, 1258 ways were tried out on various lists of words. The odds would suggest only a seventh of these would be divisible by seven, or 180 of them. But there were over 280 coincidences discovered. This is more than what the odds would have predicted. It is not spectacularly more than the odds, but like previous pages everything seems slanted to exceed the odds.
(N.B. The calculation for the odds is only of the coincidences that follow one after the other into deeper levels, or like tracing only certain branches and forks of a tree. The above is only for a small part of the tree. There is no knowing if deeper levels might have more coincidences or not. These were not checked because there were so many of them.)

The Letters
F.There are 173 letters in this English translation. This is a prime number and cannot be grouped in any way other than odd positioned and even positioned or as odd valued and even valued. If the vowels without values were included, there would be exactly 245 letters (245 = 5 x 72).
F.1The odd positioned letters (87 of them):
1 4 1 30 3 300 100 300 100 6 20 3 10 30 6 1 70 10 5 30 60 1 4 2 4 6 80 10 1 4 10 80 70 100 80 300 30 30 6 90 60 7 1 4 5 6 30 5 10 60 10 30 30 70 3 1 30 60 80 10 60 6 10 80 80 6 1 60 80 5 80 60 80 70 1 4 80 6 1 4 30 7 5 6 60 80 70

Total: 3484 = 22 x 13 x 67. (Since everything in F.1 was divisible by 7, this means the odd valued letters in F.1 would not produce a corresponding coincidence divisible by 13.)
F.2The even positioned letters (86 of them):

Total: 2522 = 2 x 13 x 97. SF: 112 = 24 x 7. (Once again since everything in F.2 was divisible by 7, this means the odd valued letters in F.2 would not produce a corresponding coincidence divisible by 13. But it is interesting how the even valued letters in both lists, F.1 and F.2 produce totals that factor with 13.)

Although the letters mirror the words with odd and even positions and odd and even values, they go no further. Perhaps this is because the number of letters is a prime number and cannot be subdivided into smaller primes.
F.5Similar to coincidence A.4.1, the digits of the letter values can also be joined. There are several ways this can be done. First the digits of the letters of each separate word are joined together. Second, the letter digits are all joined together, and then separated into three digit numbers. The digits can all be separate numbers.
F.5.1The letter values of each word are run together to form larger numbers.

Total: 1717 = 17 x 101. The result is not divisible by seven or thirteen, but one of the factors is 101, a symmetrical number mathematically visualizing the same one God who is Alpha and Omega.
G.7Forty-eight words, and 173 letters describe the passage. 48 + 173 = 221 (13 x 17).
G.8The letter H (value 7) appears 13 times. Its positions in the passage add up to 1014 (2 x 3 x 13 x 13). It is the only letter having both coincidences.
G.9The English letters YHWH are close approximations to the Hebrew letters for God’s name. Letter Y appears 3 times in this English translation and has a value of 300. H appears 13 times and has the value of 7. W appears 5 times and has the value of 100. Thus the letters YHW together appear in this passage 21 times (3 x 7). The numeric total of these letters: (3 x 300) + (7 x 13) + (5 x 100) = 1491 = 3 x 7 x 71.
G.9.2The total of the positions of the letter Y in the passage: 97. The total of the positions of the letter H in the passage: 1014. The total of the positions of the letter W in the passage: 185. These three totals together yield no feature. However, if the total for H was doubled, the result would be 2310 = 2 x 3 x 5 x 7 x 11. SF: 28 = 22 x 7.

The interesting coincidence is that the English and Chinese cannot be used together. Perhaps it is because neither are the original language.
Conclusion
How is it possible that with only 7 million permutations an English passage could be found with so many numeric coincidences? And this was done by reducing the number of words in order to follow the original Hebrew. This would have made it even less likely anything could be found. Can all this still be some massive fluke when the numeric total was the same as the Hebrew? With three languages exhibiting the same type of coincidences, can it still be simply chance? Or perhaps God does exist, and when He speaks of Himself, the very power of His reality is built into the words that express that description.
