In Three Days I Will Raise It Up (A)

Everything Jesus did was to fulfill prophecy. While he fulfilled the prophecies of a house of prayer (Isaiah 56:7) and zeal for God’s house (Psalm 69:9), he also prophesied his impending death and resurrection. His status as the Son of God underlines the importance of this prophecy.

15 And making a whip of cords, he drove them all, with the sheep and oxen, out of the temple; and he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16 And he told those who sold the pigeons, "Take these things away; you shall not make my Father's house a house of trade." 17 His disciples remembered that it was written, "Zeal for thy house will consume me." 18 The Jews then said to him, "What sign have you to show us for doing this?" 19 Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." 20 The Jews then said, "It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?" 21 But he spoke of the temple of his body. 22 When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken. 23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs which he did; (John 2:15-23)¹

By his actions, Jesus was making clear he was the rightful owner of the temple, and that he could do what he wanted with it. The authorities demanded a sign for this specific case. If it had been anyone else, they would have arrested him and thrown him into prison without even asking for a sign. They asked for a sign because Jesus was known to be a miracle worker. In asking for a sign they were ignoring all the other miracles he had already done.

Jesus phrased his answer carefully, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

He issued his own challenge. If they truly wanted to see a sign, they would destroy a temple that took forty-six years to build. Then they would see Jesus miraculously reconstitute it in three days. This would be the ultimate proof Jesus not only owned the temple, but was also its builder. Of course, Jesus knew they would do no such thing. They wouldn't risk destroying the temple just to see him fail.

Writing in hindsight, the Apostle John explained this as the temple of Jesus' body. His body, and the temple were actually inextricably linked. In their own treatment of the temple, the ruling class was really destroying it. And they would not be able to rebuild it in three days. They would treat Jesus the same way. They would kill him, and he would prove they were wrong by rising within three days.

Jesus phrased his challenge to show that the temple system was ending. He was ending it, and he was replacing it. This was also the sign of Jonah. (Matthew 12:39) An evil generation wanted a sign. They would get a sign they would miss, just as only a few fishermen might have witnessed Jonah's escape from a whale's belly. And the temple would be destroyed just the same.

The numeric section of Jesus prophesying his death and resurrection begins with his zeal for the Father's house setting the stage for the challenge, and ends with the many that believed. True prophecy does not require belief. It happens whether people believe or not. Naturally, it would be better if people did believe and took warning. This is why the prophecy's numeric section doesn't include John 2:24.

The fulfillment of Jesus' prophecy begins with the fact of his death in John 19:33. The fulfillment section ends with John 20:29, where Jesus admonishes Thomas for his lack of faith, and blesses all those in the future who would believe without seeing. (The fulfillment covers eight days after the resurrection to show Jesus has indeed risen.)

19:33 but when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. 35 He who saw it has borne witness -- his testimony is true, and he knows that he tells the truth -- that you also may believe. 36 For these things took place that the scripture might be fulfilled, "Not a bone of him shall be broken." 37 And again another scripture says, "They shall look on him whom they have pierced." 38 After this Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him leave. So he came and took away his body. 39 Nicodemus also, who had at first come to him by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds' weight. 40 They took the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb where no one had ever been laid. 42 So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, as the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there. 20:1 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2 So she ran, and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him." 3 Peter then came out with the other disciple, and they went toward the tomb. 4 They both ran, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first; 5 and stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; he saw the linen cloths lying, 7 and the napkin, which had been on his head, not lying with the linen cloths but rolled up in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9 for as yet they did not know the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes. 11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb; 12 and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. 13 They said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him." 14 Saying this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom do you seek?" Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away." 16 Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned and said to him in Hebrew, "Rabboni!" (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, "Do not hold me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brethren and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God." 18 Mary Magdalene went and said to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord"; and she told them that he had said these things to her. 19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." 24 Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in his side, I will not believe." 26 Eight days later, his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them, and said, "Peace be with you." 27 Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing." 28 Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" 29 Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe." (John 19:33-20:29)

The ending of the fulfillment passage parallels the ending of the prophetic section with the call for faith.
