Recognizing The Second Witness

The previous numeric study, God’s Kingdom Given To Another People, showed when Israel lost the kingdom. Where did it go? Or, to which nation was the kingdom of God given?

To answer the question above requires some preliminary groundwork. God said He is the Alpha and the Omega. (Revelation 1:8) Thus right at the outset, God established the existence of there being two of something. Not only is there two of something, there is also contrast between Alpha and Omega, and this goes much further (first and last, beginning and end, large and small, tall and short, heavy and light, bright and dark, hot and cold— etc.)

Two of something is seen in the law God gave Moses requiring a minimum of two witnesses. (Deuteronomy 17:6; Revelation 11:3) This is seen in the writings of the first Bible author (Moses), and the last Bible author (John). Even though creation is a witness to God’s existence and handiwork (Psalm 19:1-6), there is a national or formal witness through the people of Israel. (Leviticus 26:12) Contrasting to this, there must also be an informal witness through another people.

Following this reasoning, what would this informal witness be like? God said He loved Israel even though they were few in number because He loved their fathers and was keeping His promise to Abraham. (Deuteronomy 7:7-8) Consequently, as Israel was few in number, the other witness would be a much larger nation.

Receiving the kingdom of God means this nation had to exist at the time of Christ. Even though there might be a delay between the kingdom's removal from Israel, and the bestowing of it on another people, the requirement of two witnesses would imply it would not be long. God never leaves the world without a witness.

Any large nation at the time of Jesus would have to be a nation with a long history. This would be similar to Israel already having more than a thousand years of history.

Would this nation be near by? Going by the principle of complementary opposites (Revelation 1:8), it would more likely be far away. Two witnesses (or lights) in the same region don't help dark areas of the world far away. The greater the distance, the more likely they would be independent witnesses, more effective and more easily viewed as trustworthy.

As all the above might be considered speculative or made up, the next section draws from the Gospel of Matthew.

Since losing the kingdom, and the kingdom being given to another people is a very unique event, so the clue to the answer should also be unique to reduce the number of possibilities. And since Matthew was also writing for future generations to know, we turn to future translations of Jesus' words. The Bible has been translated into many languages. One of the most unique languages still in use by over a billion people is Chinese. It has no alphabet.¹

The Chinese Union Version (CUV) of Matthew 21:43 gives this reading.

所以我告訴你們。　神的國、必從你們奪去．賜給那能結果子的百姓

And so, I tell you God's kingdom definitely will be lifted away from you and awarded to fruit bearing people.

One may quibble about the accuracy of the translation from Greek into Chinese, or the accuracy of the translation from Chinese into English, but the key is in the very last part highlighted in green: 百姓 (people). Why the translators chose these two characters is unknown. There are other characters meaning people or foreign people, but the translators chose not to use them. The Chinese Catholic Bible (CCB) uses 外邦人 to emphasize foreign, or other/outside nature of these people. The Chinese New Version (CNV) uses 外族人 to emphasize not only the foreign/other/outside nature, but also their ethnicity.

Thus the Chinese Union Version is unique in using 百姓. 百 is the character and number hundred/100. 姓 is surname. Together, the two characters mean people, or the common people. 百姓 also literally means the 100 surnames, and refers to the first Chinese who settled along the banks of the Yellow River.

In translating Matthew 21:43 this way, the CUV could be taken to mean the kingdom of God has been given to the Chinese.

Is this coincidence? Is this providence?

The Shang Ti edition, is a special edition of the Chinese Union Version where the proper Chinese term for the one supreme God is used: 上帝. In this Bible, Matthew 21:43 reads exactly the same except for these two characters.

所以我告訴你們。上帝的國、必從你們奪去．賜給那能結果子的百姓

Coincidentally, the numeric total for the Chinese of this version of Matthew 21:43 is 55770 (2 x 3 x 5 x 11 x 13²). There are two factors of 13! Is this another coincidence? (For an explanation of turning Chinese characters to numbers, see this, and for a basic conversion program, see this.)

Coincidentally, the odd positioned characters total 32690. (2 x 5 x 7 x 467. SF: 481 = 13 x 37.) And once again, coincidentally the odd valued characters total 36106. (2 x 7 x 2579.)

(There are no corresponding numeric features for the even positioned characters or the even valued characters because this is a translation of the original Greek.)

Since the odd positioned and the odd valued characters are both multiples of 7, what happens when they are joined or added together? The result is a number divisible by 7 twice and also divisible by 13: 68796 = 2² x 3³ x 7² x 13.

It would appear some translators of the CUV truly believed China was favoured by God. This is Isaiah 49:12 from the CUV:

看哪、這些從遠方來、這些從北方、從西方來、這些從秦國來

Lo, these shall come from afar, and lo, these from the north and from the west, and these from the land of Syene. (Isaiah 49:12)²

The word Syene (Sinim in the KJV and Hebrew) is translated as 秦國. This was the state of Ch'in. At the time of Isaiah's writing around 700 B.C., 秦國 was only one state among almost two hundred states in China. It would conquer all others, grow into an empire, and become what is now known as China.

The numeric total of the Chinese version of Isaiah 49:12: 50532 = 2² x 3 x 4211. This is not a multiple of 7, 13, 11 or 19, because in Isaiah's time, the state of Ch'in had not yet united China. However, the sum of the factors shows China in the future: 4218 = 2 x 3 x 19 x 37.

Providentially, the numeric total for 秦國 is 6175. (6175 = 5² x 13 x 19. SF: 42 = 2 x 3 x 7.) The imperial factor, 13, appears along with the largest factor for China.

Returning to Matthew 21:43, there is another coincidence. The Greek word translated to English as people is εθνει (ethnei). It is the origin of the English word ethnic. In Jesus' context, the word refers to a Gentile people (non-Jewish). The numeric value of εθνει is 67. The 67th Chinese character in Big5 is 中. China is one of the many meanings of this character.

As noted at the beginning, there are 45 verses from the Gospel of Matthew. Seven verses are the prophecy, and 38 (2 x 19) verses are the fulfillment. Curiously, the numeric value of 中國 (China) is 3344 (2⁴ x 11 x 19). The sum of the factors is 38, and this matches the number of verses in the fulfillment. The factor of 19 is common to the fulfillment and 中國 (China).

According to Bibleworks 3.0, Matthew 21:43 is the 23870th verse of the Bible. (23870 = 2 x 5 x 7 x 11 x 31. SF: 56 = 2³ x 7. SF: 13.) While there is no 19 in the verse's position in the Bible, there is the factor 11.

Here is something more marvellous. The numeric value of the Greek text in Matthew 21:43 is 6137. (6137 = 17 x 19².) There are two factors of 19. The sum of the factors is 55 (5 x 11). Eleven is the second largest factor for China. The sum of the factors for 55 is 16 (2⁴). The four 2s are the smallest factors for China. In other words, the numeric total of Matthew 21:43 covers all the factors for China. (What about the 17 and 5? Together their total is 22, which leads back to China's 11.)

Another odd coincidence comes from the totals for the prophecy (45076) and fulfillment (202249). The prophecy can be subtracted from the fulfillment four times, leaving a remainder of 21945. Providentially, 21945 = 3 x 5 x 7 x 11 x 19. Once again factor 19 appears. Not only does 19 appear, but also factor 11. Both are factors for 中國 (China), a one in 209 chance. If one included the factor of 7, this is a one in 1463 chance. Furthermore, the sum of the factors of 21945 is 45, which conveniently equals the number of verses when prophecy and fulfillment are put together.

With all these coincidences (providence?) pointing to the kingdom being given to China, a very simple test statement can be constructed: 上帝的國已經賜給中國 (God’s kingdom has already been given to China.)

The total for this test phrase: 26467 = 7 x 19 x 199. Once again 19 appears with 7. The odd valued characters: 10185 = 3 x 5 x 7 x 97. SF: 112 = 2⁴ x 7. The even valued characters: 16282 = 2 x 7 x 1163. The difference between the odd and even valued characters reveals the factor 13: 6097 = 7 x 13 x 67.

Even the English would appear to concur.

Is this coincidence? One simple phrase works two ways! The place values (e) total 234. (234 = 2 x 3² x 13. SF: 21 = 3 x 7.) The letter values (f) total 882. (882 = 2 x 3² x 7².)

Rephrase the English since 賜給 could also mean to bestow.

This time, the place values (e) have nothing, but the letter values (f) still work: 962 = 2 x 13 x 37. SF: 52 = 2² x 13.

Incredibly, the phrase in Chinese, and the two English phrases were constructed as is on the fly with no adjustments necessary. It was that easy.

Is all this coincidence or providence? Is there another language where this verse has been translated as identifying a people? Is there another language where it would be so easy to produce such supporting phrases?

Confucian teachings permeate China, and chief among these teachings is filial piety. Filial piety is very similar to the fifth commandment, where God tells us to honour father and mother. (Exodus 20:12) Paul tells us this is the first commandment with a promise: to live long and do well on the land. (Deuteronomy 5:16; Ephesians 6:2) Thus it is not coincidence, but providence, that China is the longest continuing civilization, and therefore the oldest among all current nations.³

As previously noted, the number 19 is related to China. Number 11 could also be used, but 19 is much rarer and more difficult to come across. It is almost three times more difficult to obtain than 7, and almost 150% more difficult than 13. Even so, the number 19 appears in the prophecy and its fulfillment.

There are 3572 letters in the prophecy and fulfillment. The 3572th Big5 character is 禍: disaster; misfortune; calamity. The entire prophecy and fulfillment is a disaster for Israel.

These letters have 6396 digits. The 6396th Big5 character is 挍: to compare; to criticize. The kingdom is taken from those not producing the proper fruit, and given to people that do produce it. This compares Israel's intransigence with the other people's inadvertent obedience. The entire prophecy and fulfillment is a criticism of Israel.

Now we look at the Greek text of the prophecy (Matthew 21:40-46) and fulfillment (Matthew 27:12-49) for numeric features containing the number 11 and 19 that point to China. (The data used here is the same as the data in the previous numeric study.)

The Verses

1Since we are looking for support that China is in the prophecy and fulfillment, we look first at the verses. Highlighted in green are two sections of 19 verses.

This is the only section without a numeric feature. Its total: 100222 = 2 x 50111.

1.1.4Although the last section can't stand on its own, it can stand with the first section: 103961 + 100222 = 204183 (3² x 7² x 463. SF: 483 = 3 x 7 x 23). There are two factors of 7, and a second level of factors with 7.

1.2The letter values of God’s name in Hebrew (10-5-6-5) apply 23 times to count through the verses. 23 is used because it is the number of chromosome pairs in the average person, and this is a prophecy about people.

1.3.3Features 1.3 and 1.3.2 can be put together: 33523 = 7 x 4789.

1.4The 4th verse is the first that is a multiple of 19 with a total of 6137. The 45th verse is the last verse that is a multiple of 19 with a total of 4085. Thus the verse positions add up to 49 (7²).

1.4.1The 43rd and 44th verses are the only two verses that are multiples of 19, but also the only two verses where their totals have only two factors. Adding these two verses together reveals the other factor for China: 11286 = 2 x 3³ x 11 x 19.

1.4.2What about the number 11, the other large factor for China? Curiously, only one verse has a total divisible by 11. Out of 45 numbers, the odds would have suggested four being divisible by 11. It just so happens to be the 42nd verse (2 x 3 x 7). Intriguingly, it is also divisible by 13: 6149 = 11 x 13 x 43.

1.4.2.1All told, there are exactly seven verse totals having factors for China.

Of the seven verses, the only one divisible by 11 is in the middle of the other six.

1.5When the verses are categorized into four groups (odd positioned and valued, odd positioned and even valued, even positioned and odd valued, and even positioned and valued), only the mixed group with even positions and odd values is a multiple of 7. None of the other three groups appear to have anything of note until factors for China are considered. Oddly enough, it is the other mixed group, odd positioned and even valued, that has a feature.

The total of this group: 53010 = 2 x 3² x 5 x 19 x 31. SF: 63 = 3² x 7. SF: 13.
Just in case one might pass this up because the total is not an immediate multiple of 7 or 13, the sum of the positions catches the attention: 154 = 2 x 7 x 11.

Why is it the mixed groups that have numeric features? Israel had a formal covenant with God. Unfortunately, they did not truly believe God. Their own concept of gods got in the way and they failed. This was a mixed result. China had no formal covenant with God. Though they had a title, 上帝, for the one supreme deity whom they acknowledged as over all, they still worshipped other gods. This too was a mixed result.

The Words

2The 698 words have 1936 digits. (1936 = 2⁴ x 11².) There are two factors of 11 pointing to China.

Conclusion

All these numeric features, derived from Revelation 1:8's principle of complementary opposites, show the numbers 11 and 19 are just as much a part of the prophecy and fulfillment as the numbers 7 and 13. China is an integral part of the combined passages.

Consider the following coincidences. (Or are they providence?)

The wisdom from above is first pure and then peaceable. (James 3:17) Thus the nation receiving God’s kingdom after Israel will also be influenced by this wisdom. It will not be a warlike nation. (This disqualifies all the nations that caused the two great world wars.) China is the only nation where long periods of peace led to spectacular population growth. For centuries, China was the most populous nation in the world.

God brought slaves out of Egypt to become a nation. This improved the lives of approximately 2 million people in just a few days. In the entire history of the world, it was the greatest progress for the most people in the shortest length of time. A nation receiving the kingdom of God, should exhibit something comparable in its history. In a similar manner, over the last 30 years, China raised 800 million from poverty to low middle income.

It is God who renews the land. (Psalm 104:30; Deuteronomy 11:14-15; 28:4, 8, 11, 23) It is God’s blessing that keeps it. And it is His curse that destroys it when its inhabitants are evil. This can also be seen in China. China has been blessed with multiple layers of soil from the Tibetan plateau, and this has sustained the people and its civilization for over three thousand years..

China is the only nation with the concept of The Mandate of Heaven. (天命)⁴ The people all recognized that emperors and dynasties lasted only if they were righteous and benevolent. They were all subject to 上帝 (Shangti), the Highest Sovereign, or God. Shangti rescinded the mandate to rule when emperors and dynasties became corrupt, and gave it to others to do better.

Acknowledgement of Shangti by the emperors is seen in the Border Sacrifices. (郊社之禮) These were also known as the sacrifices to Heaven and Earth, thanking Shangti for His blessing and bounty on both. They were carried out each year at the northern border of the nation, and were a sign the emperor and his dynasty were legitimate. (The parallel is seen in Moses pitching his first tent to God outside the camp of Israel [Exodus 33:7], and in Jesus suffering outside. [Hebrews 13:12] It is curious how all other nations would carry out their most important religious ceremonies in their capitals, not at their borders.)

From the The Doctrine Of The Mean (section 19):

郊社之禮，所以事上帝也；宗廟之禮，所以祀乎其先也。明乎郊社之禮、禘嘗之義，治國其如 示諸掌乎！

All matters concerning the Border Sacrifices pertain to Shangti. The ancestral ceremonies are all based upon this. Understanding the Border Sacrifices and their righteousness makes governing a nation as easy as looking into one's palm! (Author's translation.)

The Doctrine Of The Mean ties filial piety (sacrifice to one's ancestors being only one aspect of this) to the emperor's sacrifice to Shangti. Where the emperor stands in for the nation, the head of the family stands in for the family.

Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the LORD your God gives you. (Exodus 20:12)

Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God commanded you; that your days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with you, in the land which the LORD your God gives you. (Deuteronomy 5:16)

Honor your father and mother (this is the first commandment with a promise), (Ephesians 6:2)

No other nation has taken one of the Ten Commandments as the basis for culture, philosophy, religion and politics. The fact that China is the oldest of all current nations and the longest continuing civilization shows the truth of the fifth commandment. It is a witness to God’s sustaining power.

When coincidences keep showing up, one begins to realize it might not be coincidence at all, but providence.⁵

From all this, it is clear China is the second national witness for God’s existence after Israel. It would only be natural for the kingdom of God to be transferred to China after Israel lost it.

1. Revelation 1:8's principle of complementary opposites would favour a language without an alphabet, because the first nation to know God, Israel, had an alphabet.

3. The precedent of gaining God’s blessing by fulfilling the fifth commandment is seen in the account of the Rechabites. (Jeremiah 35:2-19) God promised they would always have descendants who would know Him. The same holds for China's filial piety.
4. The numeric values for 天命 (The Mandate of Heaven) are 146 and 1299. The total is 1445 (5 x 17²). This is not a multiple of 7 or 13, or even of 11 or 19. However, since the concept is about God ruling over all, the sum of the factors is 39 (3 x 13).
5. There is a second and older Chinese term for China: 中園 (The Middle Garden.) Since there were mountains and deserts to the west, the ocean on the east, the cold Siberian steppes to the north, and the hot jungles to the south, the Yellow River plain where early Chinese civilization grew, became known as the garden in the centre, or the middle garden. The number values for these two characters (101, 4778) total 4879. (4879 = 7 x 17 x 41. SF: 65 = 5 x 13.) Factors 11 and 19 do not appear for this term, but there is a factor of 7, and in the sum of the factors there is a 13.
